Here is that same measure with a little stretch applied. In absolute terms, the different is maybe just a couple of millimeters, but it's noticeable because it's a not insignificant compared to the overall distances involved. Here is an example of what a measure might look like before stretch: notice how there is more space before and after the second note (because it has a long syllable) compared to the space between the third and fourth: It becomes less noticeable, but still there. Then later, we stretch the measure to fill the system, but it's a pretty literal stretch, meaning that uneven spacing is preserved. Exactly the right uneven spacing you would need if the measure ere going to be that narrow. This obeys the min distance, and as a result, extra space is added between notes as needed to make the lyrics fit, resulting in uneven spacing. Let me try again:ĭuring layout, first we calculate a minimum measure width. Feel free to submit it to the issue tracker (see Support link above). I would consider the fact that min distance is ignore when not displaying the dash to be a bug. But maybe this is just my line of thought. (Or shrink a tiny bit to accommodate for the extra space needed elsewhere). To me the option "min distance" sounds as if when I change it from 0 to lets say 0.25 that all the distances between syllables (and the dashes) that are smaller than. This seems weird to me, but then again, I haven't even looked at the code so there is probably a good reason why it came to be this way. distance when determining how much will fit, but it then doesn't obey the distance when actually placing the lyrics? I don't fully understand what you describe about how musescore determines the distances, am I correct that it looks at the min. Meaning with exactly the amount of space there is between two characters within a syllable. Not using that options makes that at least look a lot better, although I really like this option, if only it displayed the two syllables connected with the dash as if it were just one. Yes, it looks like zero space is only happening where musescore doesn't display the dash. >At first glance, it seems the option to allow the dash off seems to be interfering with the min distance, allowing zero space. The subject comes up from time to time, not just for lyrics but for other distance settings (also things like the presence of accidentals, which can affect spacing even when the stretch makes it so they don't need to). In theory, it would be possible to rework the layout to recalculate widths after deciding how many measures fit, and somehow avoid this effect. That's because we first calculate the minimum width of the measure as in order to decide how many measures we can fit (and so the minimum distance relevant), and then after we've finished filling the system, then we stretch everything from there, thus keeping the same relative effect of the min distance settings. Is that consistent with your experience?Īs for the space between syllables that don't need help, the reality of how layouts works is that changing minimum distances does affect everything. I like all the options for them but also think that they are to close to the lyrics sometimes, as seen before the lll and between gg and hh.Īt first glance, it seems the option to allow the dash off seems to be interfering with the min distance, allowing zero space. I would like to be able to say, "if syllables are closer together than set distance, the notes should be moved further apart to give them more space", without giving more space to other notes/lyrics that are fine to begin with. The distance between lll and mmm, is still non-existent, while the distance between a and b has increased, where there was plenty of space beforehand.Īm I understanding the intent of the option wrong? The second screenshot shows the same but with the min. distance option would create more distance, starting with the ones that are closest together, but it doesn't do this. Very nice feature btw!)Īs you can see there is plenty of space between abcd and very little between the syllibles after jjj. Both bars are the same (the second is to show where the dashes are, because i have always force dash off. In the first, I have the min, distance set at 0. When looking at the options under lyrics in the style menu, I found the option "min distance", but this doesn't behave the way I expected to. I make leadsheets for church and I find that often syllables in the lyrics are to close together for my liking. I have a question about the distance between syllables. My suggestion would be to look for these opinions in the various creative communities that use them often to create digital art via stylus/pen (at least that's where I've always looked). At that point, you're just really looking for opinions on which pen-enabled tablets/2-in-1's give the 'best' experience and results, and your preferred form factors (size screen, aspect ratio, resolution (screen), resolution (pen sensitivity), tilt-enabled? (pen), color gamut/accuracy/managment, etc. I'm not aware of any such partnerships, if there are. Then, the differences in how well one works vs another come down to how well pen/stylus function has been implemented for each/any specific (laptop/tablet) model - with the exception of any (potential) model has, say, partnered with ESRI to specialize its/their input (pen). The press referred to the area with terms such as “wasteland,” “auto morgue,” and “hobo jungle.” Area of city-owned land suggested for public housing by Louis Pink. With the onset of the Great Depression, it also became a Hooverville, similar to those popping up all over the country at that time, with about 400 squatters in residence. Over the years, it had become the site of an unofficial dumping ground, referred to by locals as Tin Can Mountain. The parcel Pink was referring to had been purchased by the city between 19 with the plans of creating a railroad depot that would act as a linkage between the various ports of manufacture and storage from Bay Ridge to the Wallabout.īy 1933, the land wasn’t really vacant. In February of 1933, Pink wrote an op-ed piece for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, pointing out that there was a 40-acre tract of land in the southern part of Red Hook that could easily be developed into a modern public housing neighborhood. But if it had, Red Hook would look much different today. Pink, a member of the New York State Housing Board. However, even before NYCHA came into existence, Red Hook had been the suggested location for a public housing community proposed by Louis H. This was one of the earliest public housing projects in New York City, the New York City Housing Authority having only been established in 1934. Ground broke for the construction of the Red Hook Houses on July 17, 1938, and the first residents moved into their new homes less than one year later. Headline and image from Pink’s proposal, Brooklyn Daily Eagle, February 26, 1933 But Red Hook has always been susceptible to change, and just as decisions and events are now influencing what the neighborhood will look like in the future, those that shaped it as we know it today were just as flexible and malleable, and anything but predetermined. It probably feels this way because we have become accustomed to the landscape around us, the neighborhood that we know and love. With rents increasing and condos popping up like mushrooms all around us, Red Hook seems to be changing more and more rapidly. 4w3s tend to be more energetic and driven than other Fours. Many people find that a morning cup of coffee helps get their bowels moving.Ĭoffee’s laxative effect has been attributed to the release of gastrin, a hormone the stomach produces that speeds up activity in the colon. Cut off your caffeine consumption by the early afternoon to avoid sleeping problems. SummaryĬaffeine can help you stay awake during the day, but it may negatively impact your sleep quality and quantity. These results suggest that it’s important to pay attention to both the amount and timing of caffeine to optimize your sleep. Researchers gave 12 healthy adults 400 mg of caffeine either six hours before bedtime, three hours before bedtime or immediately prior to bedtime.īoth the time it took all three groups to fall asleep and the time they spent awake at night increased significantly ( 18). One study investigated how the timing of caffeine ingestion affects sleep. Research has shown that while caffeine remains in your system for an average of five hours, the time period may range from one and a half hours to nine hours, depending on the individual ( 17). In addition, caffeine consumed later in the day may interfere with sleep because its effects can take several hours to wear off. Importantly, the amount of caffeine you can consume without affecting your sleep will depend on your genetics and other factors. You may not realize that too much caffeine is interfering with your sleep if you underestimate the amount of caffeine you’re taking in.Īlthough coffee and tea are the most concentrated sources of caffeine, it is also found in soda, cocoa, energy drinks and several types of medication.įor example, an energy shot may contain up to 350 mg of caffeine, while some energy drinks provide as much as a whopping 505 mg per can ( 16). It may also decrease total sleeping time, especially in the elderly ( 13, 14).īy contrast, low or moderate amounts of caffeine don’t seem to affect sleep very much in people considered “good sleepers,” or even those with self-reported insomnia ( 15). Studies have found that higher caffeine intake appears to increase the amount of time it takes to fall asleep. On the other hand, too much caffeine can make it difficult to get enough restorative sleep. Monitor your own response in order to determine how much you can tolerate.Ĭaffeine’s ability to help people stay awake is one of its most prized qualities. SummaryĪlthough low-to-moderate doses of caffeine can increase alertness, larger amounts may lead to anxiety or edginess. If you notice that you often feel nervous or jittery, it might be a good idea to look at your caffeine intake and cut it back. For reference, a large (“grande”) coffee at Starbucks contains about 330 mg of caffeine. Nevertheless, these results are preliminary.Ĭoffee’s caffeine content is highly variable. Interestingly, cortisol levels were similar between regular and less frequent caffeine consumers, suggesting the compound may have the same effect on stress levels regardless of whether you drink it habitually ( 12). One study in 25 healthy men found that those who ingested approximately 300 mg of caffeine experienced more than double the stress of those who took a placebo. In fact, caffeine-induced anxiety disorder is one of four caffeine-related syndromes listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is published by the American Psychiatric Association.Įxtremely high daily intakes of 1,000 mg or more per day have been reported to cause nervousness, jitteriness and similar symptoms in most people, whereas even a moderate intake may lead to similar effects in caffeine-sensitive individuals ( 9, 10).Īdditionally, modest doses have been shown to cause rapid breathing and increase stress levels when consumed in one sitting ( 11, 12). However, at higher doses, these effects may become more pronounced, leading to anxiety and nervousness. At the same time, it triggers the release of adrenaline, the “fight-or-flight” hormone associated with increased energy ( 8). It works by blocking the effects of adenosine, a brain chemical that makes you feel tired.
